If you thought Robert Eggers' The VVitch was a bit difficult to get into thanks to its unanswered plot points and dedication to period authenticity, then five minutes of Hagazussa will probably be enough to give you a headache.

This old-timey witch tale follows Albrun, a woman who grows up over the course of the movie living with the stigma of her family being labelled as witches. Whether or not that's true is kept a little vague, as while her mother was indeed into some strange stuff and lived a very private life away from civilisation, a lot of her stranger behaviours could just as easily be explained by her increasing ill-health and dementia.

The movie expertly toes the line between what's reality and what's some kind of fever dream, dwelling on the character's terrifying visions of demonic presences. It's freaky and at all times unafraid to be as anti-Hollywood as possible.

Of course, those strengths also make a second viewing unappealing. With little dialogue and a story that moves at a snail's pace, Hagazussa is a daunting flick to watch. Combine that with its oppressive atmosphere and a handful of disturbing sequences, especially involving children, and one time is enough.
