When it comes to horror remakes, few are as weird as Suspiria 2018.

In a lot of ways it's intentionally the exact inverse of the original: Gone is the loud, theatrical score in favour of a weird, low-key indie soundtrack; The vibrant colours of the original have been thrown out for a muted, desaturated colour palette, and the brisk hour-and-forty-minute runtime has had almost another hour plonked on top of it.

However, it's in those changes that the remake succeeds. This is a new take on the material, and through a focus on the characters, some jaw-dropping practical effects and a slow-moving but methodical story, it's able to etch out its own confident identity.

It's a great movie, and the mystery of this coven of witches running a ballet school builds to a ridiculously violent climax that brings news twists to the original story. The cast is great too, with a perfectly cast Dakota Johnson in the lead role and Tilda Swinton boasting three equally mad performances.

By design though, the movie is nowhere near as immediate as its pulpy predecessor. It can be maddeningly slow, and once you know the true motivations of the characters, it doesn't make for a totally engaging watch the second time through.

The ponderous pace makes for a more rewarding movie in the long run, but it doesn't lend itself to repeat viewings.
