20. Assassin's Creed Mirage

Glorified DLC it may be, but Assassin's Creed Mirage TOTALLY works as a reset to the increasingly over the top nature of the franchise at this point.

With AC Valhalla selling incredibly well, it led to Ubisoft greenlighting increasingly ridiculous and supernatural DLC to continue its story. This landed with a certain sect of the audience who forever love piecing together the newest iteration of the mythos, but for those of us harkening for a return to that original run, enter Mirage.

Sadly, AC Mirage's ending does rely on a level of essential knowledge from those aforementioned releases, but it doesn't stop this being a perfect modernisation of Assassin's Creed earlier vision. Ditching nefarious monetisation or weird arbitrary grinds to bloat playtime, Mirage is every gameplay innovation the series has made towards stealth, rolled into one. Set-piece kills, Hitman-style infiltration methods, a solid variety of tools at your disposal and a gorgeous, historically accurate location to explore and be educated by.

Assassin's Creed: Mirage has been a big sales success for Ubisoft, but where they go from here in terms of what size games get plugged into Assassin's Creed: Infinity, we'll have to wait and see.
