9. Wildflowers - Tom Petty & MTV Unplugged In New York - Nirvana
Six months after the Weezer/Sunny Day Real Estate double whammy, music fans were also treated to a bevy of delights from two legendary figures from two very different generations.
Tom Petty put out Wildflowers on November 1st 1994, his second solo album away from backing band The Heartbreakers. With the help of acclaimed production maestro Rick Rubin, Petty crafted a gorgeous selection of songs, from wistful finger-pickers to out-and-out rock jams, all helmed by the singer's trademark view of the American way of life.
As for Nirvana's effort, does that really need discussing?
Taken from recordings of their appearance on the show the previous year, MTV Unplugged in New York presented a different side to the alt rock masters; stripped back, solemn versions of some of their biggest songs and moving interpretations of others, including their now-iconic version of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World.
Sadly, Kurt Cobain would not live to see its release, as he had died earlier that same year.
Between these two albums in November and the previous two in May, 1994 sure was one diverse year for music.
