There was only ever one character who could match Walter White for sheer cunning, paranoia and ruthlessness.

As such, when fate decreed that only one of them could be left standing, it made sense for Breaking Bad to finally kill off Gustavo Fring. The demise of the show's most formidable adversary finally revealed Walter as the true villain of Vince Gilligan's masterpiece.

The mild-mannered manager of Los Pollos Hermanos was actually one of the most feared and merciless drug barons in New Mexico. Genius level intellect, fearsome cartel connections and an unrivaled willingness to get his own hands dirty - few television characters have ever came close to matching Fring's terrifying aura.

However, as alluded to previously, the Walter White Show wasn't going to continue on with the Chicken Man as the lead character. Walter could sit there and wait for Fring to eventually kill him after his many transgressions, or take matters into his own hands. Unsurprisingly, he opts for the latter, convincing Jesse of Fring's complicity in Brock's poisoning to learn of his whereabouts.

Fring's death in the fourth season finale also closed another storied character arc, revealed to have originated before the events of Better Call Saul. In a deliciously revenge-laced twist, Fring is blown half-way to Kingdom Come by Hector Salamanca - his paralyzed nemesis electing for immolation to take his despised enemy with him.
