5 Predictions For UFC Fight Island: Whittaker Vs. Till

Former Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will headline the final instalment of the UFC's 'Fight Island' concept in his bout with former Welterweight title contender Darren Till.

Liverpool-born Till will be hoping to add to the cities celebrations with a win over the Kiwi and cement himself as a genuine title contender in the 185-pound division, while Whittaker will be hoping for a quick route back to UFC gold.

The card is stacked with UFC veterans like Alexander Gustaffson, Fabricio Werdum and Shogun Rua, but it also has a fair share of blue-chip prospects looking to make a name for themselves on Fight Island. Former Cage Warriors Bantamweight champion, Nathanial Wood, will look to bounce back from his first UFC loss with a standout performance against debutant John Castaneda.

Tanner Boser will attempt to chalk up his second win in a month in his bout with Raphael Pessoa, and European stalwart, Nicholas Dalby, faces Jesse Ronson in a fight that could propel either fighter into the Welterweight rankings.

In the headline bout, New Zealand's Robert Whittaker faces Liverpool's own Darren Till in an important match for the Middleweight division's title picture.

Till fell to back to back losses in his final day's in the Welterweight division, including an unsuccessful attempt at dethroning the then champion, Tyron Woodley and a devastating KO loss to Jorge Masvidal. However, after a successful debut in the 185-pound division against former title contender Kelvin Gastellum, Till looks primed for another shot at UFC gold at some point in his career, and defeating the former champion on Saturday would be an enormous step towards the belt.

Robert Whittaker can sympathise with Till's Welterweight demise, having experienced a similar fate himself back in 2014, in which a few tough losses forced him into a weight class change. It certainly paid dividends for Whittaker who later became champion after defeating the formidable Yoel Romero for the vacant championship, only to lose it Israel Adesanya after just one defence.

You could argue that this is a must-win for either man, but the contrary is probably more accurate considering the state of the current Middleweight division. Although, with young prospects like Edmen Shahbazyan climbing the rankings at speed, if either man is to wear UFC gold in the future, there is no time like the present.

Darren Till possesses Muay Thai skills that few can boast and the Scouser will want to add to the ongoing celebrations currently happening in Merseyside. Contrastingly, Whittaker is a supreme athlete that is well-rounded in all areas of MM, has proved on countless occasions that he is one of the best to lace up the 4oz gloves and is one of the most tactful fighters on the roster.

Regardless of outcome, this has the potential to be one for the ages from two fighters that are desperate to reach the top of the mountain.
