10 Weird Ways Comics Tackled Real World Problems

1. Batgirl Lets Batman And Robin Die For Feminism

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n00xZ_mKQgk The 1966 Batman TV series is remembered for being one of the lighter depictions of the Dark Knight, despite what redesigned box art looking to capitalise on the Nolan films might lead you to believe. Adam West and Burt Ward's caped crusader and boy wonder were terrifically camp, appearing in stories that had absolutely no basis in reality from the script right up until the onomatopoeia-strewn fight scenes. Despite that, along with the fact the series ended in 1968, the dynamic duo still teamed up in the mid-seventies (again!) to deal with a vital real world issue. Specifically, the Federal Equal Pay Law, which ensured that all employees would receive the same remuneration for their work regardless of their gender, something which was brought in during the Kennedy administration but was still struggling to be enforced a decade later. Therefore Batgirl, very much a modern day Emily Pankhurst in purple glittering spandex, appeared alongside Batman and Robin in this advert which urged women to demand equal pay at their workplaces. In this particular example, Batgirl strong arms the Dark Knight into giving her equal pay to Robin (who knew either of them got paid for their vigilantism?) by refusing to defuse a bomb that is seconds away from obliterating the pair, who are tied up and helpless in the corner. Which is both totally badass and also insane, because that's Batman and Robin and you're about to let them get exploded. Still, she got what she wanted, the public got another dose of Adam...West's decidedly...subdued...line delivery, everyone was happy. Presumably, anyway, since the commercial cuts away with her still considering what to do with the bomb...
