10 Video Games That Tried Too Hard
9. Remothered: Broken Porcelain - The Game's Title Says It All; Broken...
Remothered: Broken Porcelain is the most recently released game on this list. As the title implies, it's a broken game, not just in part to the numerous issues it launched with, but because it truly doesn't know what it wants to be. Remothered: Broken Porcelain cherry picks ideas from many survival horror franchises such as Silent Hill, Outlast, and Amnesia, yet it all quickly falls apart like a wobbly Jenga tower. For fans of the first game, this second installment promised a more robust gameplay experience filled with a terrifying story, great stealth gameplay, and a fantastic location to explore. Unfortunately, these ideas never fully came to fruition. It's not often said how a game's premise and narrative direction come across as pretentious, but that's just what happens in the opening parts of this game.
Where the first game Remothered: Tormented Fathers stuck with a core concept of sneaking around a creepy old mansion and pushing the narrative forward, here, it just throws you in the deep end and tells you to just understand what's going on. If a game chooses to just throw the player into the deep end with little to no explanation as to what is going on, you better dang well sure setup the premise enough that your players will feel invested. Of course the opposite is done here and as you go through the opening hours of the game, a strong feeling of incoherence and frustration quickly set in. If the best part of your horror creation is the cathartic release of running towards the creeper just to meet your demise, then clearly that game was trying too hard.
