For practically as long a there have been video games, there have been video game secrets. Ever since the first easter egg in Adventure for the Atari 2600, players have been hitting walls, jumping down holes, and sometimes just mashing buttons hoping to find something special.
Over the years this video game signature feature became more fully implemented, secrets evolved to provide more satisfying rewards, like extra lives or a special weapon. Wolfenstein and Doom were famous for their fake walls containing hoards of treasure, healing items, and chainsaws. And if we go back to the original The Legend Of Zelda for the NES - that game was basically all secrets.
Secrets reinforce the satisfying sense of exploration we get from video games by rewarding the curious and persistent player. Secrets are still being found in older games, years after their release.
But sometimes they just fly right past you. Maybe you were distracted or in a rush, but occasionally, even in the age of social media, you miss things. These are the secrets that made it past you, that made you say, "Wait... what?" when you finally heard about them.
10. Chain Boosting - Crash Bandicoot
Some people would call the Crash Team Racing series a simple knockoff of Mario Kart. Those people would be wrong. In fact, much like the original Crash Bandicoot platformers, the game can be downright brutal. Especially competitively.
Play online and you'll notice that you are getting absolutely smoked by everyone else. You're not coming close. And they all have this blue fire trailing behind them. The reason for that is chain boosting, an advanced, difficult to master technique that's practically required for high level play.
By chaining skills together, you can build up an escalating speed boost of varying color, the fastest of which is blue.
From there, if you can continuously chain together any speed-boosting elements such as Turbo Pads and Turbo Power-Ups, you can maintain the blue boost indefinitely. But don't expect the game to give you any help. It's something you have to learn and master for yourself.
