10 Video Game Achievements That Made You Say WHAT?!

9. Heading To The Surface - BioShock 2

Another way that achievements can majorly catch players off-guard is when they inadvertently end up spoiling upcoming gameplay. It's thankfully a pretty rare occurrence, but as BioShock 2 proved, it unfortunately happens every now and then.

At the end of the game's final area, Inner Persephone, you'll need to take an elevator leading to Sinclair's escape pod, and once the elevator reaches the top, the achievement "Heading to the Surface" will pop.

However, if you check out the 'cheev's description immediately upon unlocking it, it'll prematurely spoil an impending plot twist just before it happens.

The description reads, "Headed to the surface on the side of Sinclair's escape pod," revealing that you never make it inside the escape pod as planned, in turn basically implying that something's about to go very, very wrong.

As it turns out, about 10 seconds after the achievement pops, you'll see that the hallway leading to the escape pod is lined with explosives set by the villainous Dr. Sofia Lamb. They promptly detonate, forcing you to grab onto the side of the escape pod as it launches out of Rapture's watery depths.

Needless to say, 2K Games probably should've let players soak in the shock of the moment - the bioshock, even - before dropping a sizable spoiler in plain sight.
