10 Upcoming PS5 & Xbox Series X Open-World Games You Need To Know About

Next-gen's biggest upcoming playgrounds.

Marvel's Spider-Man
Insomniac

Bioshock Infinite was originally released ten years ago; if that doesn't make you realise how quickly the video game industry evolves, I don't know what will.

Technical advancements mean that graphics and gameplay mechanics that were once considered cutting edge back in the day have been put to shame in recent times, with many now wondering just how far things will be pushed in the next few years, especially in this next-gen era.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are the most powerful gaming systems ever created, giving developers an open playfield for their imaginations to run wild with the possibilities of what they chuck into their titles.

What's more, the advancements and capabilities of next-gen equipment have meant even titles stuck in development hell for a number of years now have an open route to market. With some big releases looming on the horizon then, these are the open-world games coming to next-gen consoles in 2023 you need to know about.

10. Atlas Fallen

Marvel's Spider-Man
Focus Entertainment

First revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2022, Atlas Fallen is an upcoming semi-open-world title that might just finally propel Deck13 into the big league of developers.

Set primarily across an arid backdrop, Atlas Fallen already looks like a game that screams 'scale'. When it comes to open-world games, it feels like developers have become obsessed with flexing how much more they can fit on their new systems, stuffing their titles with so many different themes and types of locations.

Deck13, however, look like they're going against this trend with Atlas Fallen with the game solely being hosted in a fantastical desert environment. Desert themes are notoriously hit-or-miss in the world of gaming, but, what we've seen from the game so far makes it feel like a stellar example of how next-gen tech can elevate even sparse desert plains into a legitimately alien and expansive setting that looks ripe for exploring.

It's easy to get shades of Shadow of the Colossus from the teasers and trailers for the game, with just enough of an RPG focus sprinkled in to give it its unique feel.

Atlas Fallen was recently delayed to August 2023 but does already look like one of those mindless escapist titles that are always a blast to boot up and sink a few hours into.
