10 Terrible Rock Songs That Killed Classic Albums
9. Women - Def Leppard
With Hysteria on the horizon, Def Leppard seemed to do the impossible in the world of hard rock. Despite friends in the industry saying that they would never match the success they had on Pyromania, their follow up practically serves as a glorified greatest hits album from the group, with nearly half the track listing becoming fixtures in their setlist years after the fact. Pour Some Sugar On Me may have poured gasoline on the fire, but the original rollout opened with the album’s worst foot forward.
Opening up the album, Women is one of the more doofy songs to come from this era of the band, just talking about the many different stripes of females that have come in and out of the band’s life. It’s definitely a safe topic for a hair metal song, but it’s not exactly breaking new ground either, especially with the guitar riffs sounding like they were recycled from the more forgettable parts of Pyromania. We didn’t have to wait long for the band to pick up the pace on the rest of the record, with songs like Rocket and Animal coming on right after it to sort of snap us out of the drab AC/DC knockoff that we started with. Hysteria might still hold up as one of the greatest albums to come out of the ‘80s, but if the band decided to put all their promotion into this one song, there’s a good chance they would have been yesterday’s news a week after the record came out.
