Superhero films feel so much like a genre of their own that it feels strange to count them as "sci-fi", even though they share a lot of conventions. However, we'll make an exception for this one.

The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have always felt more sci-fi than the rest of the MCU.

For starters, they're set almost entirely in space. Secondly, they feature an eclectic array of aliens, robots, and other weird beings. And thirdly, they use huge, intergalactic stakes to tell simple stories.

Guardians Vol. 2 is about Peter Quill's relationship with his two fathers; Ego the megalomaniacal Celestial, and Peter's real father, Yondu.

It's safe to say that Quill has an odd relationship with both of his dads, but, when the chips are down, it's the blue one who comes good. In the film's emotional climax, Yondu gives Quill his oxygen supply, sacrificing himself to save the child of Earth he had grown so fond of.

Vol. 2 does a fantastic job in expanding Yondu and Quill's relationship, leading to one of the most heart-breaking moments in MCU history. The rest of the film is good too with plenty of action and jokes, but it's this moment that elevates it to great status.
