10 Movies You Constantly Have To Defend Hating
9. Machete
When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez released their double-feature Grindhouse in 2007, they ingeniously captured the spirit of the 1970s drive-in B-movie experience by including several fictitious trailers directed by a bevy of other directors, including Don't (by Edgar Wright) and Werewolf Women Of The SS (by Rob Zombie).
Easily the highlight of these, however, was the outrageous and exhilarating trailer for Machete, also directed by Robert Rodriguez. The ad featured Danny Trejo as the titular character slicing and brutalising his way through corrupt politicians and treacherous hitmen, and fans were clamouring to see this vision realised as a full feature. In 2010, all that clamouring was answered with a full-length adaptation and fans went absolutely wild for it. But is it really warranted?
Try to remember some of the highlights of that film. Cheech Marin as a shotgun-wielding preacher, asserting that God has mercy, but he doesn't? Danny Trejo comically making out with two women he has allegedly kidnapped? Machete flying through the air on a motorcycle equipped with a gatling gun? Granted, these are all great moments, but they were all included in the trailer. The rest of the film's runtime simply spins its wheels, waiting for the next piece of recycled footage.
Simply put, a great ninety-second trailer doesn't automatically make for a good ninety-minute film.
