10 Movies Nobody Could Stop Thinking About

9. The Fountain

Scarlett Johansson Under The Skin
Warner Bros.

The first of two Darren Aronofsky movies on this list, The Fountain came and went in 2006 without making much of a dent, but over the last near-two decades its reputation has grown as one of the most entrancing and ambitious sci-fi films ever made.

A mesmerising exploration of grief and obsession, The Fountain may make for a confounding first sit due to its surreal, opaque narrative, but the stunning visual design, excellent performances from Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, and Oscar-worthy score from Clint Mansell make it a movie you'll want to bathe in for a long time.

Incredibly produced for just $35 million, Aronofsky employed practical macrophotography techniques to avoid the high costs of traditional VFX, ensuring his film has a uniquely disarming aesthetic quite unlike any other similarly-themed sci-fi movie.

Even if you don't fully grasp the particulars of its story on a first viewing - and honestly, who could blame you? - it's a film that'll burrow deep into your brain and take up residence there.
