8. Mallen - Extremis
Extremis, the 2005/06 six-issue arc, is regarded as a seminal Iron Man story and in some ways shaped the MCU version of the character. The tale saw a reimagined Armored Avenger experience immense challenges but also receive a significant boost in power due to the eponymous serum.
The virus was administered to Mallen, a domestic terrorist who had strong grievances with authority. From it he gained superhuman attributes potent enough to confront Iron Man in his suit, a healing factor, fire and electricity generation as well as pincers that can tear through metal.
After his incubation period (Extremis causes its recipients to go into deep hibernation), the extremist emerged from his cocoon and began to wreak havoc, severely injuring Tony in the process.
After the latter received a modified version of the drug, he confronted Mallen once again and after an emotionally charged and violent fight, a reluctant and remorseful Tony blasts off his opponent's head when it became clear he would not yield.
