Since DC Comics debuted in the 1930s, critics described comic books as silly and childish. I mean, they have a point. No matter how much you love comics, watching men in tights chasing clowns and costumed criminals around the city sounds goofy as hell.

Even though some villains like the Joker can be terrifying, it's still a little funny to watch him fight Batman with jack-in-the-boxes and boxing gloves.

But there are some villains that are not funny at all. Their backstories are haunting, their appearances are sickening, and their motivations will fuel your nightmares. Some of these characters have only made a handful of appearances and yet, made an impression because they are so freaky.

We're not talking about baddies who rob banks or give Batman ample time to stop a bomb from detonating. In this list, we will be looking at villains who don't just kill their victims; they mutilate, dismember, or eat them. Some of these villains have killed hundreds. Others have a death toll in the billions.

Here are just some messed up DC villains you won't believe exist.

10. Humpty Dumpty

When Humphrey Dumpler was a boy, his dog was run over, his house was demolished by mistake, and his parents were crushed by their own Christmas tree on Christmas Day. He was forced to move in with his grandmother, who regularly beat him.

Because of his disproportionally large body and his child-like manner, he was ridiculed by bullies and was often compared to the nursery rhyme character, Humpty Dumpty.

Believing his bad luck wouldn't end unless he took matters into his own hands, Dumpler decided to "fix" anything that irked him. Despite the fact he has good intentions, his "repairs" tend to make things worse. When he disassembled and reappeared a train engine, it crashed, killing the passengers. When he tried to fix an elevator, it collapsed, killing the people within.

When he grew tired of his grandmother chastising him, he tried to fix her by hacking her to pieces and putting her back together with bootlaces. It was this act that led Dumpler to be sent to Arkham Asylum, where he obsesses about how he can fix the other prisoners.
