10 Greatest Superhero Replacements That Outshone The Originals

9. 2008 Guardians Of The Galaxy - Guardians Of The Galaxy

The Human Torch Johnny Storm
Marvel Comics

The original Guardians of the Galaxy was a far cry from the one modern-day readers may know. The team was created in the 60s and consisted of members Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex and Yondu Udonta. They were active in the 31st century in an alternate version of the Marvel Universe. While attempts were made to revive the team throughout the years, these Guardians of the Galaxy did not reach the popularity levels of their fellow Marvel peers.

Enter, 2008. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning formed a new version of the Guardians, one that would prove to be more popular than the original incarnation. This new team consisted of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Phylla-Vell, Gamora, Adam Warlock and Drax the Destroyer. Despite existing individually before, it was the first time these people banded together.

When it was time for the MCU to unleash the Guardians, director James Gunn used the 2008 team as the basis. 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy was a risk and yet became one of the MCU's biggest hits. What resulted from the film was a box office success and turned Star Lord and company into Marvel A-Listers.
