10 Comic Heroes You Weren't Supposed To Like

8. The Seven

With The Boys, Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson created something truly unique, as a comic book with very few genuinely likeable characters. The protagonists of the story, the titular team, are led by a violent, abusive murderer, trying to bring down a group of even worse people, the superheroes themselves.

The likes of Teenage Kix, Payback, and Maverikz are among the handful of superhero groups, and all are as bad as each other. Though the heroes are portrayed to the public as their saviours, the things they do behind the scenes would shock and disgust them.

However, despite these teams being made up of racists, homophobes, and sexists, by far the worst 'heroes' of all make up the Seven. The likes of Homelander, The Deep, and Jack from Jupiter are all of the above and more, committing genocide, abuse, and any other bad thing you can name, evidenced when they sexually assault Starlight as soon as she joined the team.

Garth Ennis has never been shy about his feelings surrounding superheroes. He hates them. The Boys was his way of fighting back against the genre, by taking the colourful, bright-eyed heroes that everybody loves, and turning them into the disgusting, hated villains of his story. This group are the only entry on this list that didn't eventually find popularity with the fans. Ennis wanted Homelander to be hated, and so he was - even if you love to hate him.
