10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 2000s
8. We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank - Modest Mouse
Rather than a group of shy rodents, Modest Mouse are instead an indie rock band based out of Portland, Oregon, where all indie rock bands end up eventually.
Their fourth album, Good News for People Who Love Bad News, had been their first real chart success, which gave their fifth album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, some serious momentum. How much momentum? Well, it's on this list, so you figure it out.
We Were Dead etc. etc. reached the top of the Billboard charts in April 2007, the band's first and only week in this position. With a strong nautical theme tying the songs together, the album was just the right mix of high art and accessible rock, appealing to people who like to think about their music, as well as those who could think of nothing worse.
It may have also helped that this was the only full-length Modest Mouse album to feature Johnny Marr, legendary guitarist of English band The Smiths. Thank God it was Marr involved and not Morrissey, otherwise the mice would have had some serious explaining to do in hindsight.
