10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1980s

9. Live 1975-85 - Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band

When it comes to American number ones from Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s, you're spoilt for choice.

He hit the top spot in 1980 with the album The River, 1987 with Tunnel of Love, and had his biggest ever success with the much-fabled Born in the U.S.A in 1984. Whilst that may have been the obvious choice for this entry, there was another Springsteen chart-topper from the 80s that also deserves recognition.

In November 1986, the New Jersey native and frequent collaborators, The E Street Band, put out Live 1975-85, a collection of live recordings from... well, 1975 to 1985. Clue's in the title.

Made up of his own compositions like Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town and covers from artists like Tom Waits and Woody Guthrie, this five-disc collection broke all sorts of pre-order records when it was announced and remains the second best-selling live album in the history of the US. It also topped the charts for seven consecutive weeks.

The performances are crisp and energetic, bringing entirely new dimensions to classic tunes, and proving that, at the height of his powers, there was no one like The Boss.
