10 Artists Who Made Entire Movie Soundtracks
8. Tron: Legacy - Daft Punk
Around the turn of the 2010's, Disney had seemed to develop a fascination with reviving some of their old properties. Long before we got the live-action turns of Cinderella or The Jungle Book, Tron: Legacy was picking up right where the '80s classic left off, with Jeff Bridges coming in to guide us through the digitized spaces that we had remembered. The soundtrack had to measure up to that though, and what makes more sense than some actual robots doing the heavy lifting?
After keeping quiet for the most part in the wake of Alive 2007, Daft Punk had been doing remixes before being approached to write the score for Tron: Legacy, which fit them like a glove. Going through the entire soundtrack on its own, the band really started to understand the flow of the record, with some production techniques even giving us hints at what was to come a few years later on Random Access Memories. This works much better as a film score than an actual Daft Punk product, but a track like Derezzed could have easily been a Daft Punk classic if it were on one of their mainline albums.
There were even talks that the project would be more ambitious than it was hyped to be, with the song Computerized left on the cutting room floor with a guest verse from Jay-Z. For what the cyborgs did give us though, Tron: Legacy might be one of the best examples of what that retro '80s electronica sound can feel like on the big screen.
